In Durres, Albania, near one of the harbor areas, the MUA team has developed an architectural concept for a market building as part of a closed competition. This area is a key element in the expansive development plan for the coastal esplanade, situated at the heart of a grand public park near the port. The main charm of this location lies in its vibrant fish market. The new building preserves this unique purpose (the fish market) while introducing additional public spaces to create an open, lively, and inviting atmosphere.
Albania lies on the Balkan Peninsula, in the southern part of Europe. This country is distinguished by its natural resources, beauty, and a rich blend of ancient history and vibrant culture. Albania's coastline stretches along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, graced with beaches, hidden coves, and crystal-clear waters. Along this stunning shore, the harbor nestled at the heart of the city serves as a focal point for the area’s planned development and vitality. The vision for the project area emphasizes a multifunctional approach, where the fish market seamlessly continues the authentic local character.
The design concept is rooted in the unique relationship between the building and its surroundings, expressed through a delicate transition between indoor and outdoor spaces and a sense of structural lightness. The architecture incorporates elements characteristic of open street markets and shopping districts while remaining functionally efficient and ergonomic. At the heart of the market, an open atrium serves as a gathering and relaxation space, creating the liveliest point in the building. From the terrace on the second floor, panoramic views unfold, capturing the spirit of the Durres harbor and the closeness to the sea.
